Key Analysis
GameCo's current understanding
Sales for the three geographic regions had remained the same since 1980.
Percentage of global sales by region
What I discovered
-
These charts clearly show changes and growth over the years.
-
NA and JP have been quite volatile over the years and EU is the only market following an upward trend.
-
Sales remained fairly consistent until 1996 and then it exploded.
-
Global sales reached its peak around 2009 and then declined almost all the way back down.
-
GameCo’s new understanding is that sales have varied greatly since 1980.
Sales in numbers by region
Key Analysis
-
North America has pretty much lead the way in sales since 1980.
-
Shooter games sold the most units and made up 33% of the total market share in 2016.
-
Action games sold second most and made up 26% of the total market share.
-
Sports games followed in third place and made up 20% of the total market share.
-
Simulation and strategy games sold almost no units and came in at the bottom.
Best-selling genres
Split the advertising budget between NA and EU equally, because both are massive markets and with great potential to reach the same heights again as in 2009. Move on to JP once NA and EU are both profitable.
Concentrate mostly on the best-selling genres. Shooter, action and sports games have outsold all other genres since 1980. Simulation and strategy games should only be developed if all other genres are full.
GameCo should dig deeper into the EU to better target the region and different countries inside. They should also look for new ways to target JP once they start selling there.
